Prolific I/O – Storage Accelerator (IOSA)
“Cloud speed, on-prem performance”
Overview
Prolific IO Storage Accelerator is a product that has been jointly developed between the AWS Global Storage Solution team and the GlobalXperts Solution Architects.
Why Use Prolific IOSA?
This solution is designed to enable workloads that have a demand for high IOPS and bandwidth, requiring parameters that go beyond the typical cloud configuration and deployment. PIOSA allows for the IOPS and throughput to be scaled up automatically in response to demand spikes, allowing better performance for IOPS-hungry workloads at a better cost than a typical deployment.
The Problem
- Some customers have on-premises workloads demanding 2 million or more IOPS for their block storage.
- Their peak throughput may exceed 10 Gigabits per second.
- Further complicating matters, IOPS demands spike only during limited periods each day or week.
- Consequently, maintaining a constantly high IOPS provision is both wasteful and expensive.
The Solution
- Prolific I/O Storage Accelerator tackles this challenge by dynamically scaling throughput and IOPS to meet peak demand.
- This ensures peak throughput runs only when needed.
- This avoids unnecessary expense during off-peak periods.
- This solution leverages additional EC2 instances, acting as accelerators, to offload EBS read and write operations for a designated group of multi-attach capable io2 EBS volumes.
Features & Benefits
- Optimizes performance for fluctuating workloads.
- Cache-less, stateless, pass-through architecture.
- Compatible with AWS Backup, EBS Snapshots, etc.
- Baseline IO continues even if all controllers are stopped/terminated/fail.
- Dynamic IOPS with flexible accelerator deployment.
- Cost-effective acceleration N+1 scaling with Amazon EC2 Spot instances.
- Delivers over 10x native EBS performance through on-demand scaling to 15 accelerators.
Target Audience
This solution has been designed to support the Enterprise category of applications such as CRM, and ERP systems with large data repositories that need to be accessed on-demand.
These types of workloads are known to have very high workload spikes:
- Oracle RAC/Exadata
- SAP
- Analytics workloads
- Red Hat OpenShift/Enterprise
- Salesforce
TCO Comparison
Let’s explore two approaches to storage: baseline resources, and the Prolific I/O Storage Accelerator. In the baseline scenario, EC2 instances with attached EBS volumes run continuously, always on and ready. The Prolific I/O Storage Accelerator, however, takes a more dynamic approach. It allocates resources based on actual needs, scaling up only when required within a predetermined time period. Each of these scenarios in this comparison exclude the cost of attached EC2 instances, security accounts, logging accounts, and shared services.
EC2 and storage running "Baseline"
Assumption:
- Workload is migrated from on premise VMware platform to native AWS services.
Construct:
- 1 TB storage is attached.
- IOPS provisioned for the 1 TB storage is 64K.
- Peak IOPS runs for 730 hours a month (100% of the hours in a month).
Prolific I/O SA software enabled solution
Assumption:
- Workload is migrated from on premise VMware platform to native AWS services.
Construct:
- 1 TB storage is attached.
- Peak IOPS demand for the 1 TB storage is 64K.
- Peak IOPS runs for 180 hours a month ( approx. 25% of the total month hour).
- Baseline IOPS is of 10000 a month.
- Baseline IOPS runs for 550 hours a month (75% of the entire month).
